How Many Pallets Fit in a 53 ft Trailer?
Updated By DryVanDispatch Dispatch Desk
Quick answer
A 53 ft trailer fits 26 standard 48 x 40 in pallets loaded straight, two across and 13 deep. Turned so the 40 in side runs lengthwise, it fits up to 30 if the trailer is wide enough. Double stacking can double either number, but only if the freight is stackable and the load stays under the legal weight.
Straight: 26 pallets
Turned: 30 pallets
Ask how many pallets fit in a 53 ft trailer and you'll hear "26" from most shippers and dispatchers. That's the straight-loaded count for standard pallets on the floor. It's not the only answer: turn the pallets and you can get 30, stack them and you can get more, and heavy freight can stop you well short of either.
The quick answer
| Loading pattern (48 x 40 in pallets) | 53 ft trailer | 48 ft trailer |
|---|---|---|
| Straight, single stack | 26 | 22 |
| Turned, single stack | Up to 30 | Up to 28 |
| Straight, double stacked | Up to 52 | Up to 44 |
| Turned, double stacked | Up to 60 | Up to 56 |
All of these assume standard 48 x 40 in pallets with freight that doesn't overhang, and they're limited by weight before space on heavy freight.
Straight vs turned loading
The diagrams at the top of the page show both. A current 53 ft van has about 52 ft 6 in (630 in) of inside length and about 100 to 101 in of inside width.
Straight: 26 pallets
The 48 in side runs along the trailer and the 40 in side faces the door. Two pallets side by side take 80 in of width, and 630 in of length fits 13 rows of 48 in, with about 6 in to spare. 13 rows x 2 = 26 pallets. This is the default because it's quick to load and works in any van.
Turned (pinwheel): up to 30 pallets
Turn each pallet so the 40 in side runs along the trailer. Two pallets side by side now take 96 in, and 630 in fits 15 rows of 40 in. 15 rows x 2 = 30 pallets. It needs at least 96 in of clear inside width, which current plate and newer sheet-and-post vans have; some older narrow vans don't. Pallets with only two-way forklift entry, or freight that overhangs, may not turn well. Mixed patterns (some rows straight, some turned) land in between.
Exact inside measurements are in 53 ft dry van dimensions, and the width difference between wall types is explained in types of dry van trailers.
Double stacking
With about 110 in of inside height, two layers of pallets fit if each stack stays under that height and the freight below can carry the freight above. Double stacking works for light, sturdy freight like empty containers, packaging or boxed consumer goods. It doesn't work for crushable freight, tall pallets or anything heavy, because the weight limit arrives first.
The weight check
Floor space is only half the question. The load also has to stay within your legal cargo weight:
pallets by weight = legal cargo weight / weight per pallet
| EXAMPLE | |
|---|---|
| Legal cargo for this rig | 44,000 lb |
| Weight per pallet | 1,700 lb |
| Pallets by weight | 44,000 / 1,700 = 25 |
| Pallets by floor space (straight) | 26 |
| Load limit | 25 pallets |
Your legal cargo weight is 80,000 lb gross (23 CFR 658.17) minus your tractor and trailer weight, with every axle group legal. Heavy freight like bottled drinks and paper routinely runs out of weight before it runs out of floor.
48 ft trailers
A 48 ft van has roughly 47 ft 6 in (570 in) of inside length. That fits 11 rows straight (22 pallets) or 14 rows turned (28 pallets) single stacked. Shippers posting "22 pallets" often have a 48 ft trailer or a 53 ft van with space left for something else.
Other pallet sizes
Not every pallet is 48 x 40 in. Square 42 x 42 in or 48 x 48 in pallets, and half pallets, change the math: work out how many fit across the inside width, how many rows fit in the inside length, then multiply. A shipper who says "22 pallets" without a size or weight hasn't told you enough to book the load.
Plan the load before you accept it
Plug the pallet size, count and weight into the 53 ft trailer pallet calculator to see the count by layout, the linear feet used and whether it's legal by weight. Partials that only take part of the trailer are part of what we book on dry van loads, and pairing two of them is one of the ways our dry van dispatchers fill a van. Questions owners ask
How many pallets fit in a truck?
In a standard 53 ft semi trailer, 26 standard 48 x 40 in pallets single stacked and loaded straight, or up to 30 turned. A 48 ft trailer fits 22 straight or up to 28 turned. Smaller straight trucks hold far fewer; measure the box.
How many pallets fit in a dry van?
A 53 ft dry van holds 26 standard pallets loaded straight and up to 30 turned, single stacked. With stackable freight under the weight limit, double stacking can take it to 52 or 60 pallet positions.
How many pallets can a semi truck hold by weight?
Divide your legal cargo weight by the pallet weight. If your rig can legally carry 44,000 lb and each pallet weighs 1,700 lb, that's 25 pallets by weight, one fewer than the 26 that fit by floor space.
Can you fit 30 pallets in a 53 ft trailer?
Often, yes. Turn the pallets so the 40 in side runs along the trailer: 15 rows of two fill 600 of the roughly 630 inches inside. It needs at least 96 in of clear inside width for two 48 in faces side by side, which current vans have; check older narrow vans first.
